If you want to be a professional poker player or even just an amateur player that makes a lot of money doing it, you need to start acting like one. It is considered good etiquette and just good sense at the poker table to only look at your two starting cards once the action comes to you, because doing otherwise might influence the play of the players before you.



For example, there was one poker player that used to look at his starting cards and then decide right there if he would play the hand. If he decided to play the hand, he would put his card protector on it. Pretty soon, people caught onto the fact that he was doing this and it allowed players in positions before him to overcome some of their positional disadvantage; much to the chagrin of the other players. Therefore, especially if you are playing with a lot of poker regulars, try not to look at your hand until the action comes to you.



Mucking the Losing Hand



At the showdown, if a player has shown a hand that has your hand beat, you do not have to show them the losing hand. You can muck your cards face down so that you can prevent everyone from seeing what you called with. Conversely, it is considered bad etiquette to ask someone to show you their hand if they have made a move to muck their cards. Never ask another player to see their losing hand, because if you do it could put you in a bad spot as far as the way you are viewed by the other players at the table; something you do not want to happen.
