Three Card Poker - Hand Rankings And Betting

/2008-07-21/

High card : Single card value, not in sequence, no duplicates either, and of different suit. Also, there should be a Queen or higher in a hand to be classified it as a High Card.

Pair : If two of the three cards in a hand are the same. For example, three of clubs, three of spades, and ten of hearts forms a Pair.

Flush : A flush is a hand in which all the three cards will be of the same suit, but not in sequence. For example, 2 of clubs, 6 of clubs, and 7 clubs make a Flush.

Straight : If to call a Straight, then all three cards in a hand has to be in sequence, but of different suit. For example, 2 of diamonds, 3 of clubs, and 4 of spades make a Straight.

Three of a Kind : Quite literally, this hand will have three cards of the same value.

Straight Flush : The highest ranked hand in three card poker. In this hand, the three cards will be of the same sequence and suit. For example, Queen of spades, King of spades, and Ace of spades make a Straight Flush.

Betting is crucial in every poker game. In the case of three card poker, one must know how to place bets. There are three areas where one could place bets.

Ante : A player places this bet at the very beginning of the game, even before he sees his cards. This is a mandatory bet and is applicable to all the players playing the game.

Raise or Play : A player can place this bet after seeing his/her hand. And one places a bet that is equal to the Ante if to see the dealer's hands. If not satisfied with their cards, the players can fold their hands and abstain from placing any money in the Play area.

Pair Plus : This is where all the betting 'action' lies. A player usually bets a 'pair' with the hope of getting a pair or a better hand. But, this has to be done before seeing one's hand. The most interesting aspect with Pair Plus - and the reason why people prefer betting Pair Plus in a casino is that even if you are a loser, it guarantees the bonus, provided you have a pair or higher. In other words, at least one times a player's bet is guaranteed (for a pair), and the up to 40 times the bet for a Straight Flush. This is the case if the dealer's hand 'qualifies' (a hand with a Queen or higher value). On the other hand, if the dealer does not 'qualifies', it boils down to two possibilities.

1. If you beat the dealer, you'll get your ante with raises pushed.
2. If you beat the dealer, and you have a pair or higher, and had betted on Pair Plus, you'll get a windfall of a money that covers ante, your Pair+ bonus, and will have your raise pushed.
