On April 15th, 1997, while waiting for his wife after a bartending shift in Madrid, he happened across a No-Limit Hold 'em game. Carlos normally passed his time playing chess, but the poker game intrigued him. He sat down and immediately lost about $100. The loss bothered him - a lot. So, the next night, he returned and immediately won. He continued winning for a total of five consecutive days – and suddenly realized that his new passion was much more profitable than playing chess.

As time went on, Carlos became unbeatable in the local games, and he made the only decision he could: Move to the United States. To Carlos, it didn't matter that he didn't speak English. Poker would be his translator.

In February 2001, Carlos won the $300 Limit Hold 'em event at the L.A. Poker Classic. Within a month, Carlos won the $1,000 No-Limit Hold 'em event at the 2001 Bay 101 "Shooting Stars" tournament, which earned him a free ticket to the 2001 World Series of Poker Main Event.

Just three months later, Carlos became the 2001 Main Event Champion after a gruelling eight-hour marathon final table during which he used his well-known bluffing skills to beat Full Tilt Poker pros Mike Matusow (sixth place) and Phil Gordon (fourth place). Carlos finally claimed the victory and $1,500,000 after battling heads up against veteran poker player Dewey Tomko.

In 2003, Carlos won a second bracelet in the $5,000 Limit Hold ‘em event, proving that he wasn’t just lucky his first time around. In 2004, Carlos scored again, winning the $10K Doyle Brunson North American No-Limit Hold ‘em Poker Championship, adding another $1 million to his bankroll.

Since then, The Matador has continued to dazzle the competition, making three WSOP final table appearances in 2006, including a second-place finish in the $1,500 Razz event. Most recently, Carlos won nearly $4 million and made poker history when he became the first player to ever win both a WSOP Main Event and a World Poker Tour Championship. This achievement moved Carlos onto the top-10 all-time tournament money list, making him one of the most successful tournament players of all time.
