Calculate Your Hand Odds At Hold Em

/2008-07-21/

The precise odds of hitting a drawing hand when you are at the poker table are extremely complicated to calculate. You will not be able to accomplish it, unless you are a prodigy with a gift for mathematics like a certain well known pro.

Hence the next best thing to do is get yourself a calculator and work out the odds for each possible combination of draws and then improve your memory skills by learning them perfectly. This way you will completely understand the odds under any circumstances. There is an easier way for those of us with less than a perfect memory. This is a simple way to estimate those odds.

Figuring out how many "outs" you possess is the first thing you must do. Any card that gives you a made hand is known as an "out". For the performance you are to count the number of cards you get for the hand you are approaching to. As an example, let's suppose you hold Ac 8c and the flop comes Qh 9c 4c. You are in possession of a flush draw. Out of the thirteen clubs in the deck, two are on the board and two are in your hand. Nine clubs with two chances to hit one are left in the deck. Multiply your outs times the number of chances for figuring out the approximate percentage chance of hitting the flush. That would be nine outs multiplied by two chances, or eighteen in this example.

Take that number, multiply it by two and then add a percentage sign. The estimated amount of times you will make the flush is about 36% (34.97%, to be exact). Now, let's say that on that same flop you hold the Jd Th. You have eight outs to hit the straight in this case, with four kings and four eights. You will reap sixteen outs by eight outs with two cards that have not yet come. About 32% (31.16 % exactly) of the time you can be sure that you will hit the bull's eye, if you multiply by two.

Keep in mind the percentage of the time you will hit the hand is not the percentage of time you will win the pot. You could hit your hand and lose anyway. In the primary instance, the Qc will match the board and can give some article a full house. Both Kc and 8c in the second example will produce a flush, but this doesn't necessarily guarantee a winning hand. Knowing likelihood of making your hand is a good step to better poker.

Thank you and good luck at the tables,

Scott

I have played live and online for a long time and had success, so I have created an entirely free mini e-course with Hold Em as the subject. Please visit it at:

These methods are well known and can be found in some poker books. I took them from my personal notes.
